Beadnell & Chathill Town Guides & Attractions

Beautiful Beadnell on the Northumberland Coast AONB to the south of Seahouses is a hotspot for watersports on the Northubmerland Coast. Beadnell consists of three distinct areas - the Beadnell Harbour, Beadnell old village and Beadnell Haven. Beadnell Harbour, dating from 1798 is where you will find the famous Beadnell limekilns which date from the same period as the harbour. Historic 18th century limekilns feature widely along the Northumberland Coast including at Seahouses Harbour. The limekilns at Beadnell Harbour are particularly striking and huge and are now in the care of the National Trust. Lime was used as a fertiliser to improve soil conditions during the 18th century. Rich sources of limestone in North Northumberland proved rather fruitful for the region and lime was shipped from harbour ports such as Beadnell, Seahouses and Holy Island. Remains of historic limekilns can be found at all three of these locations on the Northumberland Coast.

Historic ruins and ancient history also feature at Beadnell. Bronze-Age burial sites in the area have recently been found and historic buildings include the 16th century Beadnell Pele Tower (now part of the popular Beadnell pub The Craster Arms) and the 13th century chapel ruins at Ebb's Neuk Point.

Beadnell beach is a pretty sandy beach very popular for a choice of watersports on the Northumberland coast including sailing, windsurfing, diving, surfing, canoeing and kitesurfing. An extensive choice of Northumberland Coast holiday accommodation is here in Beadnell including self catering beach houses, fine hotels and B&B guesthouses and caravan and camping sites.

A further choice of beautiful luxury farmhouse B&Bs and accommodation sit just inland from Beadnell Bay at Chathill. Direct rail links are available from Newcastle to Chathill railway station. The village is well placed for exploring the Northumberland Coast and Alnwick and features The Armstrong's Household & Farming Museum, a superb local history museum displaying an extensive range of vintage household items, historic farming and fishing equipment and World War II memorabilia. Also in Chathill is the spectacular and well preserved 14th century Preston Tower, a scheduled ancient monument. Distinctive across Cumbria, Northumberland and Scotland, there were once around 200 such medieval pele towers, used as living quarters, across Northumberland. Preston Tower in Chathill is open to the public.

Watersports in Beadnell Bay

Both Beadnell and nearby Seahouses and The Farne Islands are top centres for watersports on the Northumberland Coast. The North Sea waters off the coast at Beadnell Point and around Seahouses and The Farnes are amongst the clearest in the UK. A number of wrecks are also in the Beadnell area including the famous Somali wreck which was bombed by a German Heinkel 111 in 1941.

The Somali wreck rests upright off Beadnell in around 30m of water. See The Farne Island Divers' website for details and diving trips around the Somali off Beadnell. Diving excursions often depart from the boat launch at Beadnell Harbour which is also within easy reach of diving around the Farne Islands.

Other popular Beadnell watersports around the sweeping Beadnell Bay and beach include sea kayaking, windsurfing, surfing and kite surfing. Beadnell Sailing Club are situated within Beadnell Harbour.
